Hit & Miss Super Bowl LI Ads

adbowlNow that the hangover from one of the best Super Bowl games ever played, seen and experienced is behind us, what now?  Well, DeVos is either in or out today. As of this post, she is a 50/50 vote.  Hasan Piker @TheYoungTurks has a must watch video circulating FB for the last week taking on Tomi Lahren (who BTW is making us ladies look bad IMHO), or if you are local to Utah, another sex ed bill goes down…

On a more POSITIVE NOTE, I got to be a part of throwing one hell of an Ad Bowl Party!  What do we do? Eat, drink and vote on the best and worst ads of Super Bowl LI.

This year may have been the year more ads than ever before had some heavy to light political undertones. Airbnb, Coca-Cola, Budweiser, Audi, 84 Lumber, Kia, American Petroleum Institute, 10 Hair Care and NFL.  The 2 ads getting the most attention via boycotts is Coke and Bud.  Boycotting because of these two ads is insane.  HELLO, people, the Coke ad isn’t new and BTW, Bud’s ad is a tribute to every’s immigrants American dream.   I have read reviews talking about how the commercial is tied to Trump’s recent executive orders and these claims are ridiculous. This ad was in concept and product long before the executive orders happened.  The message of the ad is about celebrating individuals who embody the American Spirit.  Not sure why anyone would also boycott Airbnb.  There have been ads in years past with this same theme and the commercial was a montage to all races in America!

The ad that was in your face and was meant to take a stand was by 84 Lumber.  If you actually did go watch the entire spot, it was an amazing video.  Too long for prime time TV and would have been a great submission into the Sundance Shorts section.  The tie between the little girl picking up plastic or seemingly garbage all along the way comes together at the end in the way of an American flag.  This spot is brilliant and important in current “wall” discussion.  Having lived in a border state that was more than 40% Hispanic, my views are very different than our current administrations.

We don’t have to agree, although it is worth the watch:

@84lumbernews

The ad that drove it home for me was Audi.  #DriveProgress  @audi

I even got to do a television interview since equal pay is still a hot topic in Utah.  We are among the worst states in the country when looking at the national $0.71 to $1.00 comparison.

There were a few ads trying to be clever, yet just didn’t work.  TurboTax, Avocados, Tide, Snickers (live ad was clever, yet not brand relevant), Wix, Sprite RERUN, Wendy’s, Persil ProClean, KFC, Febreze (trying to compete using Potpourri’s wit doesn’t work) and WeatherTech.

Timing is everything so Intel’s Tom Brady ad should have played after 1/2 time.

Ads that conveyed zero emotion or even boosted the brand were H&R Block, Michelin(even though the cute Michelin dude made a relevant ihearthands gesture), Mobile Strike, Nintendo, Top Games, Pistachios, Turkish Airlines and Michelob Ultra.  Michelob, I had to break it to you, but CrossFit warriors work out so they can eat and drink whatever the hell they want.

Best pun goes to Bai.  Well done!

Funniest goes to KIA, Buick and Busch. If you didn’t think Busch was funny, it may due to a Jeff Foxworthy moment.

Cutesiest goes to Skittles.

Weird yet interesting goes to Honda.

One of my favorite commercials most did not see was for Tiffany & Co.

I am pretty sure we can all agree GAGA was epic… though if she worked with Pink on her aerial part, is there a term conveying even more epic?  One note of advice to Miss GAGA, take it easy on the collagen.  You look beautiful without it!
