Counting down to 10 days of movie immersion bliss. Each year, I take 10 days for myself to do what I love the most, watch great films. My days will be filled with movies that make me laugh, cry, and think deeply. It is an emotional roller coaster one thrives for. I have seen Academy Award winners and movies Sundance goers walked out of. My indie inner essence will be awakened and rewarded.
This year the Sundance Institute had a record-breaking 14,259 submissions from 152 countries. Holy crap, we must give a huge round of applause to the programming crew who undertook a task three times that of 2018. I wonder how many movies were cut in the first 15 minutes of watching? I secretly want this job!!
Only 110 or so movies made the cut. As a Sundance goer, there are 59 movies on my list to see, but the reality of balancing work and movies must prevail, so my final planned see count is 27.
A couple of movies I personally am looking forward to seeing are Brittany Runs a Marathon, The Mustang, The Nightingale (the same director did Babadook) and Apollo 11. There are some highly anticipated and controversial movies including Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile with Zac Efron (from Highschool Musical to Ted Bundy) and Leaving Neverland, a documentary about Michael Jackson’s alleged sexual abuse victims (don’t worry this one is by HBO and will no doubt be released shortly after the festival is over). If you liked the Dragon Tattoo books, then this doc a must watch for you, Stieg Larsson – The Man Who Played with Fire.
There are still tickets and if you want to get your movie on, there are still Salt Lake Grande Theater passes available.
Here is my list. Enjoy!
